Rankin Inlet – uh, why?

10 Feb

I remember in school English classes, the teacher used to have us dissect books, to try to determine the underlying ”reasons” as to what the authors meant by this or that aspect of their stories. So, I thought, who knows, maybe someday a class of students will be asking some deep philosophical questions about my new book, INTRUSION which is the first in this series of Keeno McCole action novels. The epicenter of the story vacillates between Toronto, Canada, China and Rankin Inlet, a tiny town on the northwestern shores of the Hudson Bay, way the hell up there on The Canadian Shield.

So why does Rankin Inlet rate becoming the epicenter for a major terrorist attack on this nation and America?

I’ve never been there, and in fact, looking back, I’m not even sure what provoked me to select this place for one of the hottest action scenes in crime fighting, where two British Harrier jets and the RCMP, take on a team of bad boys on the edge of this town. Uh, in Rankin Inlet – you say? Yeah, absolutely, and what’s more, the real nasty stuff, which is the core of the plot (RFID implants on humans), takes place at a research facility in this otherwise remote location.

I hope the people of Rankin Inlet do not take offense, because I think the reason I selected this place for this story is because I wanted to high-profile the indigenous people of Canada, out of respect and nothing more, and I wanted to bring this part of Canada into the limelight.

It’s a tough, challenging environment up there – and the people must be equally tough, so I figured that in the wrap-up phase of this new story, it would be good to have those living in Rankin Inlet and the surroundings, who were viciously afflicted by this plot, to get in the last word, and the last laugh.

I’m hoping that people up there read the book, because I want them to see the sense of respect and admiration that I tried to build into the plot.  Besides, it’s a good read, and when the cold weather sets in, they’ve got a few hours on their hands.

About Réal Laplaine

After fifty years of adventures, I sat myself down in front of a computer, opened the door to my imaginative juices, and started writing the stories that I wanted to. Besides the fact that writing is the closest thing to my soul, and gives me the greatest high imaginable, I find that writing is a way to tell the world stories that stretch the imagination. I am all about stepping outside the box - and since I can remember, I have never felt like I fit into the proverbial square hole. I was always looking for the holes in the fence, new doors, new potentials - and my stories reflect this propensity. I am also a strong advocate of human rights - and as such, my books cast a spotlight on sources of oppression in our society. Freedom is my byword, and plots in my books raise the flag on those elements in our society which threaten our freedom. Other than that, I love a good action novel, I love realistic sci-fi, I am thrilled by the works of Tolkien, Louis L'Amour, Richard Bach, Mark Twain, Cussler and numerous other authors who manage to spin tales which keep us up late at night, reading and stretching the bounds of our world. I have published three books with a fourth on its way soon - the first in a triolgy about a man who can leave his body at will and who, as a result, discovers some nasty shit and becomes the target of a nationwide search to stop him from revealing what he knows.
